VICE PRESIDENT, ENGINEERING

1. JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the CEO and based in the UK with significant travel to and within Africa, this role is for the head of the Engineering Department within Africa Mobile Networks Ltd. The primary responsibility is the architecture, design and implementation of the entire AMN communications, management and support systems and networks, which comprises the AMN Global Network Operations Centre in the UK together with networks in multiple sub-Saharan African countries.

A hands-on ICT professional is sought who is capable of designing, implementing and maintaining AMN's ICT platforms and communications networks as well as managing a small international team of ICT staff.

2. INTRODUCTION

AMN operates multiple ICT platforms, including
  • Mobile Communications Platform (MCP) through which - in multiple countries - mobile subscribers are able to access voice and data services, comprising a BSC (Base Station Controller) located in the customer's data centre together with BTS (Base Transceiver System) equipment located at multiple (up to 800) remote mobile network base stations throughout each country. The MCP has its own Network Management System (NMS).
  • VSAT Communications Platform (VCP) through which - in multiple countries - the BTS at the mobile network base stations are connected to the customer's data centre via one of AMN's dedicated in-country VSAT teleports.
    The VCP has its own Network Management System (NMS).
  • EPS Management Platform (EMP) through which the Photo-Voltaic (PV) Electrical Power System (EPS) is managed.
  • E-Commerce Platform (ECP) through which mobile subscribers in multiple countries can top up pre-pay SIM cards via authorised AMN airtime distributors.
  • Customer Management Platform (CMP) through which all trouble tickets and network change requests from multiple customers in multiple countries are managed.
  • Administrative Support Platform (ASP) via which AMN's internal accounting, supply chain and other ERP applications are hosted.
  • Email & Web Platforms (EWP) which include the servers for AMN's website and email servers.
The VP, Engineering is responsible for the design and implementation of all the above platforms, ensuring that the Operations Department is able to deliver the required services with high reliability and availability.


3. KEY TASKS

The key tasks for the Engineering VP include:
  • Architecture design, to ensure AMN operates a set of inter-connected ICT platforms which are reliable, maintainable, scalable and cost effective
  • System design
  • System implementation
  • System configuration and maintenance
  • Vendor management
  • Staff management
  • Weekly and monthly reports to CEO and executive management team

4. KEY SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

The key skills required of the Engineering VP are listed below and the successful candidate is likely to have successful prior experience in all or most of these areas:
  • IP network design, implementation and operation
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of routers, switches and servers
  • Mobile communications network (2G with EDGE) design and operation
  • VSAT network design and operation (RF, IF and baseband)
  • Electrical power systems design and operation
  • LAN design, implementation and operation
  • WAN design, implementation and operation
  • Good oral communications
  • Good written communications

5. QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate is likely to have the following:
  • Engineering or IT degree, at least to Bachelor level and preferably masters
  • At least 5 years of post-qualification experience
  • ITIL certification
  • Cisco certification
